Altocumulus stratiformis undulatus, also known as a mackerel sky, which reminded Roger Graham Hewstone of the sailor's old proverb; 'mares tails and mackerel scales make lofty ships take down their sails, wary of bad weather ahead'. Villarica volcano has active vents, one of which created this unique volcanic vortex ring, also known as a 'smoke' or 'vapour' ring, while simultaneously in the distance there were altocumulus lenticularis forming. Bob spotted these developments while climbing Villarica volcano in Chile.
